We are starting a new series about Christian sexuality in general, because we feel it is time to explore some new ideas. This first article was originally published under a different title some weeks back and is now being incorporated in this series.
We feel it is timely here to talk somewhat about the spirituality of sex in general, including masturbation. We need to do more study of the subject in order to back up the concepts described, so this is really just a preliminary viewpoint, based on some study we have done.
We understand that when you engage with your sexual organs, you open up your spirit. Sexual activity, at its core, is fundamentally spiritual. If you are having sex with another person, your spirits “co-mingle” or join with each other. The result is the bond known as a “soul tie”. Soul ties are something that leaders in Christian relationship ministry will break in prayer if someone needs to be separated from a person that they no longer have a sexual relationship with, so that the soul tie no longer has an impact on them.
When you masturbate, you have the choice of who or what you open up your spirit to, since there is no other person present. This is where we suggest that you can choose to open up your spirit to God. This can only be achieved if there is no sin taking place at the time you are masturbating. If you choose to sin during masturbation, you have opened yourself to spiritual bondage from demonic causes. Commonly associated bondages include sexual idolatry, impurity, lust and perversion. Anyone who masturbates to pornography will take on these spiritual bondages unless they repent and explicitly break the power of these bondages in prayer.
We have stated on numerous occasions that we do not believe masturbation in and of itself is a sin. However, it can commonly be associated with other sinful behaviours. If masturbation is to be useful to any Christian to practice for the purposes of healing, then any kind of sexual sin must be avoided, otherwise the result is an increase rather than a reduction of spiritual bondage.
We are going to write a series specifically focused on masturbation as a subtopic of this particular theme, but in order to avoid some very long article titles, it will not have the title prefix of “Christian Sexuality || Spirituality of Sex || “. Instead, the articles, will just be titled “Spirituality / Purpose of Masturbation” with appropriate numbering and/or subtitling following that heading depending on the specific subject of the article. It’s possible that in the future we could look at other subtopics of this theme, but none are particularly planned at the moment.
